Don Moore Construction is a one-man company, specializing in residential kitchen and bath remodeling projects in Sacramento and small room additions, normally under 500 square feet. Most of my projects are in the Land Park and Curtis Park neighborhoods. I have a particular interest, and much experience, in working on older homes, generally built before 1940, staying true to the original intent of the design and feel of the house.
In the past five years, architects, kitchen designers or homeowners have designed most of my kitchen remodels. I generally work from drawn plans rather than design-to-build. I usually work on one project at a time and I am on site daily, from demolition to finish. I do my own demolition, construction framing, concrete, electrical, and carpentry finish and detailing. I prefer to use my own subcontractors on every project. This allows me to have complete control over the final product, assuring the homeowner of the results they desire.
Since most of my jobs are in the Curtis Park and Land Park neighborhoods, the mechanical and electrical systems are likely to be inadequately sized. As such, on most typical projects, I prefer to incorporate a full upgrade of systems. A typical remodel will include a new, 200-amp electrical panel, new under-kitchen plumbing and sometimes windows which match the house. I do not re-face cabinets, but prefer to install new cabinets, either custom built or manufactured. I try to interface as much as possible in ordering, sizing and layout of cabinet plans with the owner or designer, again to assure the desired goals.
Finishes are usually left up to the owner to pick out. Purchasing is either by me or the owner, as desired. I work on an allowance-based bid whereby the owner has a cost allotted for the particular finish: tile, flooring, electrical and plumbing fixtures, counters, etc., and the final cost is adjusted with the contract.
During a typical kitchen project, I will have a dumpster bin on site for about a month and sanitation facilities for all the workers throughout the project. The working area gets cleaned daily and the affected part of the project is sealed off from the rest of the house. I do not allow smoking in the house. I will either obtain the necessary building permits or the owner may take care of it themselves.
